Farnham was commissioned to create this work as a companion piece to Frederic Remington's Paleolithic Man (1908) by Col. D.C. Collier, president of the Panama-California Exposition. She exhibited the work at the National Academy of Design Winter Exhibition in 1912 and the following year at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition. Two casts are known to exist. The R.W. Norton Gallery bronze was descends from the personal collection of Sally James Farnham. The Collier cast has not yet been located.
